“Grown-ups” in the Middle of Crisis

We are all on this crazy journey we call life and somewhere in the middle of it God usually sends us something to cause us to pause and take inventory. For those who listen well that pause might be prompted by something simple like a misunderstanding with a friend or a move to a new town.
For those who are a bit hard of hearing like myself, that pause might take something a little more cataclysmic to get our attention. A failed marriage, a diagnosis or cancer, a rebellious teen or an impending bankruptcy. God likes to get us to a place where we can “get it”. To see that life is not just about getting stuff and making a name for yourself.
Relationship is what it is all about. Unfortunately it takes a crisis in the middle of our focus on those temporary and irrelevant things to get us to stop are realize that. I think a good mid-life crisis is just an opportunity for God to kick us out of the nest and help us to grow up. Not that there is really any such thing as a “grown-up”. You are more likely to see a Sasquatch than a grown-up human on this planet…but hopefully there are some who can occasionally resemble one. We will all die of old age before we actually “grow-up”. So enjoy the journey and don’t take yourself too seriously. Look for the opportunities to connect more than the opportunities to succeed and you will find those crises melting away.

p.s. A good Midlife Crisis could always use a good book.
